Ahhhh...the Simple Life

Going along with my whole "living a more simple life" thing...I decided to start making my own cleaners. Saving money was my number one reason to start doing this. But, less chemicals around is always a plus. I haven't blogged about simplifying things since I mentioned doing this in my New Years blog. We have simplified a lot this year and a WHOLE lot over the past couple of years. We've been down to basic t.v. and no cell phones for a long time now. I've gotten used to both now. This year we did buy prepaid phones for when we travel or emergencies. I don't even know my phones number. It costs us the same for two phones every six months as it did every month before. We've also gotten rid of a lot of things. Scaled down a lot. We (I say we loosely, the hubby is supportive of my efforts but seems to have no desire to simply in any area that he is in control of) have been doing this for a few reasons. One reason is to save money and another reason is with the theory of, it is easier to focus on God and what really matters in life without so much "stuff" to get in your way and distract you. I rambled on enough. Back to my Walmart trip. I went down an isle to buy some Borax. As soon as I walked up to grab the box there was a woman there about my age with two kids that looked like my kids. She asked me what I was planning on doing with the Borax. I told her I was making my own cleaning supplies. She laughed and said that that was what she was trying to do too. She looked up recipes online just like me and was trying to get all of her stuff. We chatted about it for a little while. We decided she got much more complicated ingredients than me. She was looking for baking soap. I've never even heard of that. Anyone know what that is? We couldn't find it. I should have gotten her name. We could have compared notes on our cleaner results. Oh well. My next endeavor is to start making my own bread in the oven and milling my own flower. My former Amish friend is going to show me how to make the bread, hopefully next week. Unfortunately grinder/mills are expensive. Not sure when I'll be able to afford that. I'm hoping with this simplifying we will start becoming more self sufficient. Not completely, just more. I mean I still want electricity and I'm not about to start showering with rain water.

Sounds like an adventure!!

Check out this blog: http://mybackporch.blogspot.com/

She used to go to SMIC when we were kids (a few years older than you and I), and she's been blogging about "simply live" for a few months now. She's experimenting with a whole bunch of simpler, make-at-home things, and it's quite fascinating!!

I don't want to say her name on here since she doesn't mention it on her blog, but if you can't figure out who it is, shoot me an email and I'll tell you! But I know you'll find it right up your alley for what you've been working on!

Thanks for telling me about the blog! I love it! I read a lot and I still have no idea who it is. E-mail me on Facebook because I'm really curious. :)

Wow, that simplification sounds really complicated to me! I hated making baby food. I did it, but I hated it. I don't think I'm that simple of a person. I'm glad you are, though.

So, how did the cleaners work out? Were they cheaper in the end?

Ooh. I'm now curious who it is, too :).

Brooke - Wouldn't it be "simpler" to just buy your flour. It's not that expensive and you save the time of having to mill. More efficient = simpler, right? Just sayin.

Linds - In the long run it's a lot cheaper to mill your own flour if you make your own bread. Plus it's better for you. You know how healthy I am. :) If you don't use much flower at all then it wouldn't be cheaper.

HA - I'll blog about the cleaners but they work really well and it's a lot cheaper. And, I actually didn't make it too long with the making baby food. It was a lot of work.
